Barn Door Installation Guide
Installing your barn door is a rewarding DIY project. Most homeowners can complete the installation in 1–2 hours with basic tools.
Tools You'll Need
- Power drill + drill bits
- Level
- Tape measure
- Pencil
- Stud finder
- Ladder
- Wrench or adjustable spanner
Step 1 — Find Your Wall Studs
Use a stud finder to locate the studs above your doorway. Mark them with a pencil. The track must be anchored into studs (or a solid wood header board) to safely support the weight of the door.
Tip: If there are no studs in the right position, install a wooden header board (2×6 or 2×8 lumber) across the wall and anchor the track to that.
Step 2 — Mount the Track
Hold the track above the doorway at the correct height. The bottom of the door should clear the floor by about ¼ to ½ inch. Mark the drill holes, then drill pilot holes into the studs and secure the track with the provided hardware bolts.
Use your level to make sure the track is perfectly horizontal before fully tightening.
Step 3 — Attach the Door Hangers
Install the door hangers (rollers) onto the top of the door according to the spacing specified in your hardware kit. Typically the hangers are placed about 2 inches from each edge of the door.
Step 4 — Hang the Door on the Track
Lift the door and hook the hangers onto the track. This step is easier with a second person. Once the door is on the track, check that it slides smoothly.
Step 5 — Install the Floor Guide
Attach the floor guide at the base of the door to prevent the door from swinging outward. Position it so the door slides freely without wobbling.
Step 6 — Install Door Handles or Pulls
Attach handles on both sides of the door at a comfortable height (typically 36 inches from the floor).
Final Check
- Slide the door open and closed several times to make sure it moves smoothly.
- Check all bolts are securely tightened.
- Ensure the door sits flat against the wall when fully closed.
