How to Measure
How to Measure for Your Barn Door
Getting the right size is the most important step before ordering. Follow these simple steps to measure your opening correctly.
Step 1 — Measure the Door Opening Width
Measure the width of your doorway from wall to wall (the rough opening). Your barn door should be 2–4 inches wider than the opening on each side to ensure proper coverage and privacy.
- Example: If your opening is 36 inches wide, order a door that is 40–44 inches wide.
Step 2 — Measure the Door Opening Height
Measure from the floor to the top of the opening. Your barn door should be 1–2 inches taller than the opening for a proper fit.
- Example: If your opening is 80 inches tall, order a door that is 81–82 inches tall.
Step 3 — Check the Wall Space Beside Your Opening
A sliding barn door needs wall space to slide into when open. Make sure you have at least as much clear wall space beside the opening as the door is wide.
- Example: A 40-inch wide door needs at least 40 inches of clear wall beside the doorway.
- Check for light switches, outlets, or other obstacles in that space.
Step 4 — Measure the Wall Above Your Opening
The hardware track is mounted above the door. You need at least 4–6 inches of clear wall above the opening for the track and hardware to be installed properly.
